The linux file browser works great for looking through images, both thumbnails and full screen size. I also made a script that puts the exif data in a simple text file that can be quickly searched for camera model, f-ratio, range, exposure time, camera temperature and others, as well as the names in the directory path. I wrote a simple shell script to provide a quick index of all images on my system and I can search that list with a script (I call it findimage) that greps the catalog and it takes less than 0.12 second.
I use a directory tree structure with directory names so I can find things. I have 1.2 million image files spread over two 12 terabyte disks with 16 terabytes used at the moment.
